There are various types of stainless steel 316. Most commonly used are L F, H, and H variations. Each variant is different and each serves reasons that are different. L means 316L steel contains the lowest carbon content, which is below the 316.

While they are similar to Type 304 commonly found in the food industry, the Type 316 and 316L both are more resistant to corrosion and are more durable even at high temperatures. They are also not able to be hardened by heat treatment and can be easily shaped and stretched.
Differentialities between 316L and 316 Stainless Steel
Steel 316L has less carbon content than the 316. However, despite its low carbon levels, 316L is very similar to 316 in almost every way. The cost is similar, and both are tough and corrosion-resistant, making the two a great choice for high-stress situations.
For projects that require a lot for welding, then 316L is a better choice due to the fact that 316 is more susceptible to welding corrosion than more 316L (corrosion within the weld). But, the 316 is able to be annealed to resist the attenuation of welding. The 316L is a suitable stainless for high temperatures and high corrosion applications This is why it's so popular for marine and construction.
No 316, nor 316L is the cheapest choice. The 304 is similar to the 304L however, the price is much lower. They aren't as strong as the 317 or 317L that have more molybdenum and have better total corrosion resistance.
